ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture is an integral part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Its aims are to treat the whole person and restore the balance between the physical, emotional, and mental aspects of the individual rather than specific symptoms in isolation.

Acupuncture brings the body back to a state of equilibrium by the insertion of very fine needles just beneath the body’s surface into acupuncture points that are situated along the meridian energy channels, which then affect and stimulate the systems of the body. Some people decide to have acupuncture to help a specific symptom or condition. Others choose to have treatments to help maintain good health as a preventative form of healthcare or simply to improve their sense of wellbeing.

  • What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that has been used for thousands of years to alleviate pain and treat various health conditions. Acupuncture is based on the TCM theory that health is governed by the flow of qi (vital energy) through pathways in the body called meridians. By inserting needles into specific points along these meridians, acupuncture aims to restore the flow of qi, thereby improving health and wellbeing. Over centuries, acupuncture has evolved and spread globally, becoming integrated into various health systems and subject to scientific research to show its efficacy.

How often can I do acupuncture?

The frequency of acupuncture treatments depends on your individual health needs and goals. While some may benefit from weekly sessions, others might need them less frequently. Our practitioners tailor treatment plans to each patient's unique situation.

    Should acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are as fine as a strand of hair, so most people don’t feel anything. Some may experience a slight tingling or a dull sensation when needles are inserted in a particularly sensitive area, but this is usually just uncomfortable.

Should acupuncture cause bruising or bleeding?

Minor bruising or bleeding can occasionally occur at the needle sites and is usually harmless. However, these instances are relatively rare. If you have concerns about bruising or bleeding, especially if you have a bleeding disorder or are on blood thinners, please discuss this with us.

Musculoskeletal: How effective is acupuncture for back and nerve pain?

Acupuncture is widely recognised for its effectiveness in managing chronic back pain and sciatica. It works by stimulating the nervous system to release natural pain-relieving compounds. For conditions like sciatica, we believe that acupuncture can help reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and improve mobility. Individual results can vary, and more than one session is recommended for the best outcomes.

Fertility: How can acupuncture support fertility and IVF treatments?

Acupuncture may enhance fertility by improving blood circulation to reproductive organs, balancing hormone levels, and reducing stress. During IVF cycles, it's thought that acupuncture can help by thickening the endometrial lining and increasing the chances of embryo implantation.

Pregnancy: Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy?

Yes, It can be an effective treatment for common pregnancy-related issues like back pain, morning sickness, and stress. Certain points are avoided during pregnancy so it’s essential to seek treatment from an experienced practitioner.

Pregnancy: Can acupuncture be used to induce labour?

Acupuncture may be used as a natural method to help prepare the body for labour and potentially induce labour. It is generally considered safe at full term (37+ weeks of pregnancy) and can be a gentle way to encourage the body to start the labour process. However, it should be done under the guidance of a healthcare provider and an experienced acupuncturist.

Mental Health: Can acupuncture help with anxiety and depression?

Yes, acupuncture is believed to stimulate the production of neurotransmitters related to mood and stress, such as serotonin and endorphins, providing a natural way to improve emotional well-being.

  • Acupuncture has become well recognised in the effective reduction of pain as well as the treatment of a wide range of other conditions, including:

    Acupuncture for Musculoskeletal Conditions

Acupuncture and TCM provides relief from conditions such as neck and back pain, sciatica, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis and injuries like strains and sprains, by stimulating the body's innate pain relief mechanisms, reducing inflammation, enhancing circulation, and fostering natural healing processes. Acupuncture for Women’s Health

    Acupuncture for Women’s Health

Acupuncture and TCM helps many women with a range of gynaecological issues by balancing hormones and reducing inflammation and pain. From addressing fertility and pregnancy challenges to menstrual conditions such as PCOS and endometriosis, and menopause symptoms, our comprehensive treatments support women through various life stages and challenges.

    Acupuncture for Respiratory Conditions

Acupuncture and TCM offer holistic benefits for respiratory conditions like influenza, cough, asthma, sinusitis, and hay fever by enhancing the immune system, reducing inflammation, clearing mucus obstructions, and directly relieving symptoms such as wheezing and congestion. These treatments aim to strengthen the Lung Qi, which is crucial for respiratory health, and modulate the body's response to allergens, thereby improving overall respiratory function and reducing the impact of allergies. By addressing both the symptoms and underlying imbalances, acupuncture and TCM provide a complementary approach to conventional care, focusing on long-term wellness and prevention.

Acupuncture for Mental & Emotional Health

Acupuncture and TCM nurture the body's nervous system to ease stress hormones, inviting a serene sense of calm. By targeting specific meridian points associated with emotional balance, acupuncture can help to reduce feelings of anxiety and depression. This holistic approach not only seeks to relieve immediate symptoms but also addresses underlying imbalances, contributing to overall emotional well-being, resilience against stress and improved sleep patterns.

    Acupuncture for Gastrointestinal Conditions

The underlying principle in TCM is that health issues, including gastrointestinal disorders such as IBS, constipation, diarrhoea, and indigestion, stem from imbalances or blockages in the body's vital energy flow. For gastrointestinal conditions, acupuncture points are selected to target the digestive organs, aiming to enhance digestion and alleviate symptoms like pain, bloating, and irregular bowel movements. We also recommend herbal formulas, food and lifestyle modifications tailored to an individual's specific imbalances.

    Acupuncture for Urogenital Conditions

Acupuncture and TCM offer significant benefits for managing urogenital conditions like cystitis, frequent urination, and incontinence. Key benefits include the regulation of kidney function, which is crucial for urinary health; the harmonisation of the bladder to improve symptoms like urgency and pain; the removal of damp-heat, which can cause inflammation and infection; and the promotion of proper fluid metabolism to alleviate symptoms of frequent urination and incontinence.

This integrative approach seeks to relieve symptoms and address the root causes of conditions, promoting long-term health and preventing future issues.
